Abstract— despite the decades of discussion, the debate is over now and technology has massively forced its integration into education sector. Digitally oriented generation is demanding to meet their potential and desire in learning with technology. While education entities evaluated, argued, and considered the implications of the various technology transformations, e-content was rapidly coming to life. This was dramatically accelerating, when Apple released the iPad in April 2010, selling more than 3 million units in less than 90 days. This led to a consumer benefit with dropping prices for tablet devices, the e-content preferable carrier. The e-books emerged in a rigid pattern becoming more interactive and full of life with a promising anticipation to defeat its competitors, the printed text books and traditional methods of teaching.
While discussing cost effectiveness is left to business perspective, educators need to discuss new learning models that add a fourth dimension to the three existing ones: curriculum, instruction assessment and technology as delivery environment. However, Interactive e-books should not be introduced for the sake of capturing attention and leisure-reading. If the learning underpinning theory is not identified by the educator then the technology will lose its effectiveness. It’s argued that new learning theories will be formulated to accommodate to the immense technology embedding into education. Meanwhile we need to map e-learning models into pedagogic principles. If a constructivism theory is in practice then e-books can work solely with students’ centered learning approach.
With enormous readymade e-books and online resources, it will be difficult to promote the development of tailored e-books. It should be made clear to the teachers that a tailored e-book enables the teacher to customize the material in the text book, develop interactive content, develop more context-oriented, and to add resources to enrich the students’ learning process resulting in incredibly engaging students in their learning process. Above all, teacher can contain the learning strategy in the e-book.
This paper is an action research conducted on eleven graders in Visual Programming course. One whole lesson of around 20 pages was developed as an iBook and delivered to students in a self-paced learning student centered approach. While analyzing impact of academic achievement of this approach needs more in deep research, students’ were surveyed to verify on their preliminary reaction to this approach. The findings pointed us to both promises and challenges.
